Mayweather Versus T.I: The Battle Outside of the Ring.
Las Vegas’ favorite tough guy Floyd Mayweather Jr. just can’t seem to keep out of trouble. This past weekend the undefeated WBC welterweight champion had a little hand to hand combat with rapper T.I.
Now with all the swank and posh spots open at 2AM in Vegas, you would think these two guys would pick someplace classy to exchange blows. Light at Mandalay Bay? Tryst? Shoot, even in front of the Mirage Volcano would have made more sense than throwing chairs around Fatburger’s, which BTW happens to be the champ’s favorite place to eat on the strip. Go figure.
Here’s the skinny: Earlier this month there were words between the two guys in NY after T.I.’s wife, Tameka “Tiny” Cottle popped up in some photos with Mayweather and others. Apparently there are no blurred lines between T.I. and his shorty, (or tiny in this case) and he had no trouble letting Mayweather know it either. The photos he got so riled up about were taken at the champs post-fight party after defeating Marcos Maidana, and only showed his wife having a good time with a half dozen or so other partiers, nothing illicit at all.
Fast forward a few weeks and another picture pops up, this time of Tiny with Mayweather’s daughter. T.I. must not have been happy about this one either. This guy might have some issues and it isn’t Mayweather. Anyhoo, the very next night he hunts down the boxer, who is just trying to eat a burger in peace, and tells him they need to talk again. One thing leads to another, Mayweather tells T.I. to "control his bitch", and it was on.
One security guard was treated for a cut, but beyond that it seems as though no one else was injured, unless you count pride. Let’s face it, a brawl in a burger joint isn’t exactly something to brag about.
In the days following the event, Mayweather made a public statement regarding what happened. According to him, he has known Ms. Cottle for a lot longer than he has known T.I. He even went so far as to offer an apology to the Atlanta rappers wife for calling her a bitch: ”I don’t want to say that about Tiny so I do apologize to Tiny because shes cool people. She never been disrespectful of me.” And while that shows some real class in the midst of a classless situation, Tiny’s f-word laced tweets, blasting her husband for his jealousy and supposed infidelities did not.
The Dead and Gone rapper chose to stay quiet, except for one short video to prove that no one gave him any black eyes. At least not yet.
While we joke about the incident, it could potentially have some serious legal ramifications for Mayweather. The boxer is still on probation from the 2012 domestic battery case which landed him in Clark County jail for 2 months. Whether the court system decides to use this against him remains to be seen.
Us normal folk can get away with burger joint brawls without all the hoopla, but when you are a multi-million dollar sports icon being challenged by a green-eyed rapper? Nothing about this kind of drama is going to stay in Vegas.
